For coworkers separated by mountains, deserts and oceans the telephone has served admirably for 100 years as a lifeline to help keep them connected. With the advent of international calling, the distance barrier for real time communication was finally eliminated. The power of this connection has lead geographically separated families, friends and businesses to rely on international phone service for both personal and professional needs. However, the downside has long been that international service is rather expensive. Calling the London office only to be put on hold might have earned you the ire of a fiscally minded human resources department.
Previously, the best option was to either get a phone plan that offered international calling or to constantly purchase those international phone cards you always see advertised in the windows of your local corner store. With the evolution of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calling, the days of excessive costs are in the past. Rather than depending on a global telephone network to relay your call across nations, VOIP calls connect through the Internet, which means the call is sent to the server and then the receiver, rather than being routed through multiple switches and exchanges. VOIP providers can piggyback off the networks established by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) instead of maintaining their own and are able to pass off the savings to the consumer. Because of these savings, and added features like video, we can expect VOIP to surpass traditional phone service as the standard for voice communications, much in the same way that email did with traditional mail. Like it has with many other aspects of modern life, the Internet is reshaping the ways in which we communicate.
Capitalizing on this technology, a multitude of VOIP providers have cropped up to offer a variety of connection methods and service features (most of which would never be possible with traditional phone systems). However, one feature they all have in common is greatly reduced rates for international calling when compared to traditional phone service. Depending on the calling method and device, some VOIP providers even offer free international calling. So what are the best options for those family members and business people who regularly call long distance?

  1. Both plans offer free calls to Canada and Puerto Rico and cost $4.99 and $14.99 a month, respectively. Also included is mobile VOIP usage and a free second line for a traditional phone.

    Average User Rating: 4.2/5
  2. Vonage – One of the bigger names in VOIP, Vonage offers unlimited calling to landlines in 60 countries and mobile phones in 10 countries for $25.99 a month. Countries that aren’t in this selection are subject to additional fees. Additionally, ‘unlimited’ international calling is subject to Vonage’s reasonable usage guidelines.

  3. Skype – Skype offers free voice and video calling between users of their popular app. This includes international calls, making this potentially the best option for those who are calling tech savvy relatives or colleagues.
